Stand-Up Pouches
Mono-Material PE Stand-Up Pouches for Canadian Brands
Stand-up pouches stand on shelf, carry full print and reclose with a zipper. Walter Solutions helps Canadian brands move their pouches from conventional multi-material laminates to mono-material PE structures that are high barrier and designed for PE recycling streams.
What “mono-material PE” means
A conventional stand-up pouch is usually a laminate of different materials. Two common examples:
- PET/AL/PE: a PET outer layer for print and stiffness, aluminium foil for barrier, and a PE sealant layer, bonded with adhesives.
- PET/PE: a PET outer layer laminated to a PE sealant layer, sometimes with a barrier coating or metallization when more protection is needed.
These structures protect products well. But the layers are different materials bonded together, and they cannot easily be separated after use. That makes them difficult to recycle in flexible-film streams.
A mono-material PE pouch is built so the film family is polyethylene throughout: a PE outer film, a PE inner (sealant) film and a thin barrier layer between them. Because the pouch is predominantly polyethylene, it can be designed for PE recycling streams. It is not automatically accepted in every program; that depends on the finished pouch and on local collection. See how we word recycling claims.
| PET/AL/PE | PET/PE | Mono-material PE/PE | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main layers | PET, aluminium foil and PE, bonded with adhesives | PET and PE, bonded with adhesive | PE outer film, barrier layer, PE sealant film |
| Barrier comes from | Aluminium foil | Coatings or metallization, when used | A high-barrier coating layer |
| Material mix | Plastic and metal | Two different plastics | Predominantly polyethylene |
| Recycling design | Difficult to recycle in flexible-film streams | Difficult to recycle in PE film streams | Designed for PE recycling streams; local acceptance varies |
This comparison is qualitative. Actual performance depends on the specific structure, thickness, pouch size and product.
How barrier works without foil
Polyethylene on its own is a low-barrier material: oxygen and water vapour pass through it relatively easily. Foil laminates solve that with metal. A mono-material PE pouch has to solve it inside the PE structure instead.
The film technology behind our PE/PE structures places a water-barrier layer and a high-barrier coating layer between the outer and inner PE films, and uses a modified inner PE film. That film is covered by U.S. Patent No. US 12,097,686 B1, held by our manufacturing partner. See the patent details.
We do not publish barrier numbers on this page. Barrier, seal strength and shelf life depend on the complete structure, pouch size, inks, zipper and your product, so technical data is shared per project and performance is confirmed in sampling. See Technical Resources.
Pouch options
Format and features
- Bottom-gusset stand-up pouches
- Flat-bottom (box) pouches
- Reclosable press-to-close zippers
- Tear notches and easy-open features
- Hang holes for peg display
- Custom sizes and fill weights
Print and finish
- Custom printed artwork
- Matte or gloss finishes
- Clear windows, where the barrier allows it
- Full-coverage print, or a clear pouch that shows the product
Every add-on matters for recycling as well as for performance. A zipper, window, label or valve made from a different material can change how a finished pouch is handled. We review components together with the film, not one at a time.
PE/PE or PP/PP Premium
The main option for most dry food, pet food, snack, nut and coffee pouches. A polyethylene-based, high-barrier structure designed for recycling.
A premium, higher-cost option for tougher heat and humidity conditions, where barrier performance needs to stay more stable. We recommend it only when the product or the supply chain needs it. It is a performance choice, not a recycling claim.
Both are described in more detail on Packaging Solutions.
Line trials before production
A PE-based pouch does not seal exactly like a PET/PE or foil laminate. A PE outer film is softer and handles heat differently, so sealing temperature, dwell time and pressure often need adjusting. That is normal, and it is why we recommend a trial before the first production order.

Stand-up pouch FAQ
What is a mono-material PE stand-up pouch?
A pouch whose layers are all from the polyethylene family: a PE outer film, a PE sealant film and a thin barrier layer between them, instead of a mix such as PET, aluminium foil and PE. It is designed for PE recycling streams; local acceptance varies.
Will a mono-material PE pouch be accepted everywhere in Canada?
No. It is designed for PE recycling streams, but collection of flexible packaging varies by province, municipality and program, and components such as zippers, labels and inks can affect how a finished pouch is handled.
Can a PE pouch match the barrier of a foil laminate?
It depends on the product and the shelf life you need. Our PE/PE structures use a high-barrier coating layer instead of foil. We confirm suitability in sampling, and you validate shelf life on your product.
Will a PE pouch run on our current filling line?
Often, with adjustments. PE seals differently from PET-based laminates, so sealing settings usually need tuning. We recommend samples and a line trial with real product before production.
Is the film technology patented?
Yes. The high-barrier film technology behind our PE/PE structures is covered by U.S. Patent No. US 12,097,686 B1, held by our manufacturing partner.
When would we choose PP/PP instead?
PP/PP Premium is a higher-cost option for tougher heat and humidity conditions where barrier needs to stay more stable. It is chosen for performance and is not described as designed for recycling.

Recyclability notice
Recycling acceptance and collection methods vary by province, municipality and recycling program. A package described as “designed for recycling” has been developed with material compatibility in mind but may not be accepted in every local collection system.
